Happy Halloween / Reminiscing / Shameless Self-Promotion Part Two

Happy Halloween 2014! Long time no blog.

Today is the fifteenth anniversary of the release/1st screening of my film, The Ominous Bride Occurrence. I bring this up for a few reasons. One -- the obvious -- it's a horror spoof whose anniversary is today, and today is Halloween. Duh.

There are many pleasant memories associated with this little film. It started life as a request from some film industry friends who missed the annual Halloween shows of the then recently departed Oingo Boingo. They were going to throw a bash and wanted me to stage some sort of Mystic Knights style cabaret show for said party. I countered that a short film would be just as fun and still in the same spirit.

The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo gave birth to The Merry Kiss of the Ominous Bride. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge -- do you get it?) The Blair Witch Project was the phenomenon of the time and seemed an easy target. Throw in that, equal parts H.P. Lovecraft, the Black Dahlia and a Neo-Druid cult and suddenly we had pretty much improvised The Ominous Bride Occurrence.

Pleasant memory number two; the party and screening itself. Besides the film itself, a band was put together for which I was somehow enticed to be singer and general master of ceremonies. Amongst other things we did an absolutely dreadful punk version of The Monster Mash. My kids would love to see it, but fortunately my wife taped over that video years ago with a Magic Bullet infomercial or some such engrossing subject. Just as well.

But the party and screening were a blast. The film was well received by a standing room only crowd that included guitarist/arranger Steve Bartok of Oingo Boingo himself, as well as world class filmmaker Jerzy Skolomowski (I count The Shout, Moonlighting and Deep End amongst my personal all-time favorite films.)

Reason number three why I feel it is important to post the film today on it's anniversary is bittersweet. Much of the film was shot one night in and around the campus of where I worked, the then Four Media Company, which eventually became Todd-AO Burbank. Todd-AO no longer exist as of this last summer, but it is often on my mind. Many Todd-AO employees pop up along the way. My favorite moment in the film occurs at around the 3:22 mark. ADR mixer extraordinaire, Dean St. John stands at his mixing console talking about the legend of the Ominous Bride as well as Jack the Ripper. Pay close attention to the images on the screen behind him and you will realize that our tongue was planted firmly in our cheek.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my beautiful co-star in the film. Natalie Recalde was my girlfriend of the time. Fifteen years later she is my wife and the mother of my children. I am the luckiest man on the planet. Reason enough for me to post the film all over again.

Enjoy.

Where is the Love?

Methinks thou "doth protest too much." Sorry for mangling Shakespeare, but that's how I feel about the increasingly hyperbolic arguments coming from the George Zimmerman camp in Florida.

SOPA on a ROPA

Haven't written much lately. Got tired of all my whining. Never intended to go off daily on political issues that irritated me. No -- I just wanted to write more -- and I have been; in fact, I've been writing more of the stuff I've actually wanted -- not just this blog. It worked. Daily ranting got me back in front of the keyboard.

My Final Blog

Well,

Here it is, the last thing I'm ever going to write. Haven't had much to say lately.

There Will Be Blood

I'm glad to see the President has returned.

Returned from where you ask? Oblivion. Purely and simply, oblivion.

Schizophrenic Nation

I honestly don't understand the Libyan situation. At least, the more I listen to the news, the less I understand.

Dazed and Confused

I love disaster movies.

One of my earliest, fondest movie memories is that of seeing "The Poseidon Adventure" at the drive-in in 1972. I believe that I was capsizing boats in the bathtub for the next two years until my attention was turned to drawing/designing giant fireproof skyscrapers upon seeing "The Towering Inferno." These movies really exhilarated my young mind.

Show Me the Money

President Obama is right.

Last week, commenting on the possibility of an NFL work stoppage, the first in twenty four years, he seemed stunned that an industry that generates approximately $9 billion a year could not find an amicable way to split the dough up to everyone's satisfaction. And now just under three hours ago, the owners have locked out the players after negotiations broke down Friday afternoon.

Pay No Attention to That Man Behind the Curtain!

I love the scene at the end of “The Wizard of Oz” when Toto runs under the curtain and starts nipping at the heels of the Wizard. The curtain is pulled back, and the Wizard is revealed to be nothing more than a scared little man, hiding behind his position so that he may bully the people, which he was supposed to be serving.

I think Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is a lot like the Wizard. Let me explain.

Rubber Reality

I was going to go on about the sad state of genre film, then I came upon this.

It looks like it could possibly be the greatest movie ever made:

Strong Mother&*%#@rs

Mike Huckabee is an opportunistic hypocrite.

Let's just get this out of the way and quote exactly what he said last Tuesday on Michael Medved's radio program:

Welcome

My wife says I rant a lot. I think she's sort of right. I used to rant a lot. I would go on about things so vociferously that stuff would come out of my mouth that surprised even myself. Somewhere along the way I stopped. Now I just stress out. I guess that's the reason for "House of Redfly".
